Cathie Holden - “Education for Citizenship”

Were you ever taught how to be a ‘good citizen’, or (assuming you are one!) did you pick it up as you went along? Does good citizenship mean keeping an eye on our neighbours, staying within the speed limit and not joining a riot, or is it as something broader - and deeper - than that? Young people today are growing up in an increasingly complex world, and have very real concerns about their own future and that of their community, yet schools often fail to address this. Cathie Holden is Associate Professor in the School of Education at Exeter University, specialising in citizenship education.  She will discuss with us the potential of this important new subject for addressing the concerns of young people around current global issues and preparing them as active citizens, aware of justice, equality and human rights.

Refreshments will be served in reception from 7.30. The meeting will take place in the Wesley Room, starting at 8.00.  Further details from David Horn ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Lent House Groups:

This year there will again be a series of ecumenical house groups running during Lent at various times and in various venues.  The Mint has been asked if we could host an ecumenical house group at the Mint on a Thursday afternoon each week during Lent.    There is a set of discussion materials (this year on Power) provided for all groups to use.

If you would be interested in joining such a group, please contact me today, as the central Churches need to confirm arrangements very soon. Please help if you can. Thanks.

Andrew Sails

if you have any sleeping bags (not new, but in reasonable condition) that you don’t use anymore, Gabriel House would be please to have them. Please leave them in Reception for Viv Davies or deliver them to Gabriel House.

Reducing the Debt:

The Reception area now houses a display showing the debt still outstanding on the redevelopment and how we are progressing in reducing it. This will be updated as and when reductions are made so that we can be encouraged in our giving and fundraising. The aim is to clear the debt by the end of 2013.

Peace Candle:  In common with many other churches, each week we light the candle on the Communion Table as an expression of our prayers for peace in the world.
Sponsored Slim:
Six people have registered for this so far, and had their preliminary weight recorded. Others have indicated that they intend to join later. So I am extending the date by which you can take part and will make it ongoing to allow for others to participate.  After your private weigh-in, all you have to do is collect names of friends and family to sponsor you and then keep focussed on losing weight. The suggested amount is £1 per lb. One person has offered me a bonus of £5 if I reach my target of losing 10 lbs. If you don’t need to lose weight but would like to encourage someone by sponsoring her/him, please let me know. Elizabeth Webb
Quarterly Cakes: Thank you so much to all who provided cakes, buns, marmalade, crumbles etc. for the stall, and to all those who made purchases after the service last Sunday. I am really pleased to report that we made £99.75 towards reducing the Redevelopment debt, so I intend to continue with Quarterly cakes. The next one will be in April. If we all contribute in small ways we are chipping away at the debt, and as the saying goes, “Every mickle makes  muckle”.  I have tow unclaimed tines – one a Roses tine and the other a McVities Victoria tine. They will be awaiting collection from the pigeon holes. Margaret Farrow.
