Mint Walking Group

We have continued to meet about every three weeks throughout the year, enjoying all types of weather! Our numbers vary from six to thirty and anyone able to walk four to seven miles is very welcome. The terrain varies from fairly flat country walks to coastal and moorland walks with their “ups and downs”!

The walks are an excellent way of getting to know people. They are advertised in Forward and the weekly notices. Different people organise them and there is always a phone number for anyone requiring extra information or a lift. It is a particularly good way for anyone on their own to get to know other members of the Mint.

Some recent Walks:

Belstone Stocks walking walks in Dartmoor National Park Devon England

Belstone Stocks

East Okement River and Belstone Walk:  A riverside and moorland walk of approx. 5 miles length starting at 1.00 pm from Okehampton Railway Station.  The walk, over some large boulders follows the river, and a short steep climb takes us onto the moor where we should be rewarded with open countryside views.  The rest of the walk is level onto the village of Belstone and then returning to the start via country lanes and fields.  The café at the station should be open to provide a welcome cup of tea.  Further details Alan and Margaret 01392 256851

the tramway at Hay Tor

A moorland walk of about 4 miles, taking in the granite tramway and quarries near Hay Tor.    Reasonably flat, with one gradual climb.    Meet at 1.45 pm in car park on the Hay Tor to Manaton Road (grid ref SX769778).    Take B3387 towards Hay Tor; turn sharp right about 200m before lower Hay Tor car park (opposite barn with corrugated roof);   the car park is about 400m. up the hill.   Bring light refreshments if desired.   More details from David Horn

Please meet at 1.30pm outside Harpford Church, grid ref SY 092 904.
To reach Harpford take the A3052 eastwards from Newton Poppleford.
After crossing the River Otter take the second turning to the left.
(These turnings are very close together.)
Parking is limited around Harpford Church, so please car-share where possible.
The Sidmouth bus (52B?) runs half-hourly and stops on the A3052 just after crossing the river, from where one can walk to the church in 10 minutes.

Exact details have yet to be clarified so please contact David Parker or Margaret Andrews for further information (email via Andrew Sails).   We expect the scope of the walk to include riverside, minor roads, sandy woodland and a climb up Beacon Hill from which one has an extensive view. Approximate length 5 miles.

Meet at the Finch Foundry at Sticklepath at 1.00pm .    The Foundry is a National Trust property in the middle of the main street but permission has been given for everyone in the group to park in its grounds through the narrow archway. (Non Trust members are asked to park on the grass.)

The walk will be approx 4½  miles (shorter if weather is bad) taking in Belstone Cleave.  Sturdy footwear is recommended.   The new timing should allow for visits to the foundry and/or the tea room after the walk.

The first 200 yards of this walk are quite steep, although very firm underfoot.   After that there are no uphill problems.   However, if any potential walkers are put off by this, please contact me (01647 61289).   It is very easy to arrange a short detour by car and to arrange pick-up of vehicles at the end of the walk.

This six mile walk covers the East Dart river and Bellever area of Dartmoor and offers some fine views of the central moor.  Start at 1.30pm from the public car park at Postbridge (toilets, shop) on the B3212 (ref OL28 646 788) between Moretonhampsted and Princetown.  Those wishing to eat before and/or afterwards will find the East Dart Hotel nearby.
